Sandra Vida's 'Way Station'

Sandra Vida's 'Way Station'

EMMEDIA is proud to present: 'Way Station', a multimedia installation by Sandra Vida.

About Way Station:

Employing subdued colour and an abstracted interplay of video images, Calgary artist Sandra Vida explores the legacy of cultural histories in the present. Based on personal reflections, and produced during the Covid pandemic, WAY STATION comes to grips with the oppression, violence and conquest that characterize most ancestral pathways. In response, she affirms hope for change, and performs rituals of healing, transformation, and regeneration.

About the artist:

Calgary artist Sandra Vida has been an important contributor to the coming of age of performance, film and video practices in Canada. She is also known for espousing feminist, collaborative, and equity principles and strategies. Sandra Vida is of Celtic/Norse background, and her studies in psychology and literature continue to inform her work. Installations have often premiered at EMMEDIA, and have been featured in The Works Art & Design Festival in Edmonton, and the Soul Noir Festival in Dublin. Her video works have won awards at Paris ShortFest, California Indiefest, Stockolm ShortFest and Detroit Independent FilmFest. In recent years she has been honoured as a Canadian “Eminence Grise” (respected elder) at the 7a*11d Performance Festival in Toronto, and was awarded Calgary mayor’s Established Artist award.  website:  https://sandravida.com/

An essay by Yang Lim on Way Station can also be read here.

About Yang Lim:

As an independent curator and writer, Yang Lim engages with the possibilities of art in conveying diverse perspectives on contemporary issues and catalysing public opportunities for conversation and reflection. Working with artists who work out of a variety of geographical, cultural, and social contexts, he curates exhibitions that engage with topics such as representation, intersectionality, heritage, multivocal histories, language, and Asian experiences. In doing so, he encourages audiences to step outside of their usual frames of reference, while challenging the homogenization of diverse viewpoints and experiences. As digital platforms increase in popularity, he continues to explore new ways of bringing the traditional gallery experience to audiences around the world.

This project was made possible in part thanks to funding support from Alberta Foundation for the Arts & Calgary Arts Development, as well post production supoort from QuickDraw Animation Society.
