THE TRUE WEIGHT OF SOUND: ARTIST PANEL THE TRUE WEIGHT OF SOUND: ARTIST PANEL

An artist panel moderated by Lindsay MacDonald with artists Craig Fahner, Gary James Joynes, and Tasman Richardson
Location: Room ICT 516, Information and Communications Technologies building (ICT)
University of Calgary
856 Campus Place NW
Time: 1 – 2:30PM
FREE admission

When we consider the meaning behind the name Particle + Wave, we consider the tangible and intangible. In this panel discussion, we will examine a possibility in between the two: How can sound create something tangible? Does sound follow form or does form follow sound? We will investigate the transformative power of sound in sculpture, video and performance to shape aesthetic experience. Tasman Richardson, Gary James Joynes and Craig Fahner will discuss their ideas about how sound can take on weight and shape, and how sound is positioned in their work.

He is best known for his critically acclaimed solo installation Necropolis at the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art which earned him a place on Bruce Mau’s list of 21st century Canadian Icons. He recently premiered his collaborative performance Hydra at Elektra 14, exhibited his Joan of Arc inspired video rose window Memorial in Paris across the street from the actual rose window, and presented a solo exhibition of lenticular printed decaying VHS portraits at Neubacher Shor Contemporary in Toronto. PASSAGES PASSAGES

A Panel Discussion
Saturday, November 1, 2014 @ 2 – 4PM
EMMEDIA Screening Room – 351 11 Ave SW

The work of women artists today has been impacted by the evolving history of feminist thought as well as its contemporary social context. How do women artists now construct their identity, social role, sexuality, and place in the world through their work? How does their work reflect their response to life’s passages, changes and challenges?

In a free-ranging discussion moderated by Mireille Perron, fellow artists Andrea Mann and Shelley Ouellet will offer excerpts from their work, ideas and reflections, along with featured artist Sandra Vida, whose most recent video work, Journey, will be on exhibition.

JOURNEY JOURNEY

by Sandra Vida
October 24 – November 1, 2014 @ 12-6PM (excluding Mondays and Sundays)
Opening Reception: Friday, October 24, 2014 @ 7-9PM

This new projected video installation features as a central motif, the image of a white horse approaching the camera in an endless loop.  Overlaid on this image are constantly shifting layers of imagery gleaned from the artist’s photographs, paintings and drawings, as well as excerpts from her previous video works. The dream-like mood is enhanced by the natural sounds of wind and water, and an evocative violin tune. Creating a contemplative and immersive space, the interplay of images and sound may call up the viewer’s own dreams and reflections.
