EMMEDIA: Where Media Arts Live

We are the nucleus of our community, supporting artists in the creation of works that resonate far and wide. An electronic media arts centre established in 1979 and incorporated as a non-profit society in 1983, EMMEDIA is professionally managed and directed by practicing artists. The Society responds to a broad community by offering affordable access to media art production tools, services, to technical and educational support, and to an array of public exhibition programs.

EMMEDIA defines the “media arts” as the use of electronic media in artistic, educational and community contexts where the author/director retains creative control and copyright. Our commitment to the media arts crosses a range of media and disciplines: audio, video, web-based art, independent film, animation, multimedia, performance and environments.

The centre provides a focus for media arts activity and a gathering place for artists to interact and exchange ideas. EMMEDIA offers public screenings, lectures, installations and performances; introductory, advanced and custom-designed workshops; artist residencies; production awards and scholarships. A growing library of over 1100 electronic recordings by artists is housed on-site, along with a research library.

EMMEDIA has custom built suites and offices, which reflect and respect the needs of the artists and communities we serve. Portable digital video production gear includes all the necessary accessories. In-house, our multimedia labs are equipped with Mac Pros offering a powerful array of software possibilities. Members have access to user-friendly high-end digital audio and video editing and the capability for multi-format recording. The screening room, a flexible space seating fifty, is used for screenings, workshops, installations, rehearsals and production with its multimedia projector system. EMMEDIA is HD compatible throughout its facility.

In 1989, EMMEDIA was a founding member of the Alberta Media Arts Alliance Society (AMAAS). Collaborating with numerous arts organizations and institutions, locally and nationally, and with the public and non-profit sectors, EMMEDIA’s members and staff are often engaged in other like-minded media arts organizations. Many are involved in pro-active community initiatives outside of EM.
