EMMEDIA is proud to present the 5th PARTICLE + WAVE Media Arts Festival, a unique 3-day event that will celebrate the critical innovation and creativity present in the media arts community. This festival will showcase an art form that by it’s very nature, is constantly evolving and growing with the integration of ever-changing technological processes. Screenings, installations and live performances by local, national and international artists will be showcased in Calgary.

PARTICLE + WAVE: Screening Program

Featuring works by APOTROPIA (Italy), Alex Ateah (Winnipeg), Tommy Becker (USA), FOONYAP (Calgary), Patrick Jenkins (Toronto), Marianna Mihorat (USA), Carol Nguyen (Toronto), Eileen O’Meara (USA), and Hiroya Sakurai (Japan)

We are proud to present this year’s screening program for PARTICLE + WAVE that features filmmakers from around the world that experiment with narratives, mediums and personal perspectives. Each work defies convention and are innovative and unique in the way they tell a story and/or how the work was created. Having received over 200 submissions this year, we chose ten short films that explores the human connection through visual poetry, archive footage, personal memories and a sex hotline.




a quiet flamenco

a quiet flamenco exposes the introverted and vulnerable aspects of flamenco dance through interlapping/contrasting/complementing/experimenting works in sound and film. It is an immersive sensory experience, which makes space, opens space and allows space for perhaps unexpected variations of flamenco expression.

An installation exploring the insidious corruptibility of our material and personal relationships through the internet. We communicate haphazardly, moving from pillar to post, through cables and oscillations. The desire of connecting to each other being the very thing driving us apart. An inquisition about connectedness in the cold monolithic spheres of data.

On the feature night of PARTICLE + WAVE, we explore the many facets of media arts, including audio, video, animation and digital interfaces. Be immersed in media arts with performances incorporating projections and soundscapes that are mixed live before your eyes. Experience an interactive installation in the lobby that gives you a chance to try out a vacation destination if only for a brief moment. This is a night that showcases the ever-changing technological tools and processes, and the artists who utilize them in amazingly creative ways.
