EMMEDIA is pleased to launch our long awaited anniversary publication, Expanded Standard Timeline, kicking it off with a party to celebrate the people in our community, and the contributors to the publication.

Expanded Standard Timeline is an anthology of essays from thirteen Canadian artists-writers-activists. Edited by Calgary artist and catalyst Grant Poier, the book features seven texts that were commissioned for EMMEDIA’s Twenty-Fifth Anniversary in 2005, a wealth of shared memories and information. This book is crucial in that it not only examines the history of Electronic Media Art in Calgary and Canada, but it also shares our stories and models with a broader constituency. The publication serves as a resource for a new generation of artists and participants, providing background context, hard-earned knowledge and encouragement, and we hope, an awareness of the base on which they can stand and build.

Too often these individual and collective accomplishments have gone unnoticed, and important initiatives go without record or acknowledgement. We rarely see ourselves reflected in national or local media, and as people move on, or away, our local history is fragmented and lost. It is time to acknowledge the value of the contributions made, to Calgary and the larger community, by EMMEDIA and the people involved.

This book, a modest achievement, begins to address the near invisibility of the art and media art practice that thrives in Calgary. EMMEDIA looks to the future with a sense of accomplishment, and an optimism that comes with new possibilities. It’s a good time to have a party!
